Logic 7 Setup Tips
Logic 7 Setup Tips

On the whole, users are reporting that Logic 7 is stable, but getting it up and running with your existing plug-ins can be a bit of a trial.

Logic 7 contains the AU Validation tool which basically prevents the program from loading plug-ins, which may cause problems or crashing. This is helpful but when first installing the program, you will probably find most of your beloved instruments and FX missing due to incompatibility.

Here is a quick checklist to prepare your system for Logic 7.

  1. Logic 7 supports the latest version of Mac OSX (10.3.8 at time of writing). Most of your other software should be OK with this version (inc Pro Tools v6.7) so run a system update. Please note that some Digidesign systems such as MIX and MX001 will not be compatible as they cannot run software higher than ProTools v6.4.
  2. Install Logic 7, restart, then launch the program
  3. Logic will scan your AU plug-ins which will take a while. If it finds incompatible plug-ins, it will take you to the AU validation tool. If it doesn't offer to open the tool for you, go to Logic 7 (at the top of the screen), Preferences, then AU Validation tool. When this opens, it will give you a list of your AU plug-ins and indicate which are working and which are not.
  4. Print or screen grab (Shift/Apple/3) this list then close Logic 7
  5. Go to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300170 . Here you will find a list of plug-in versions, which support Logic 7.
  6. Using the list that you printed / captured, go to the various manufacturer's websites and download the listed version of your plug-in (or newer if applicable).
  7. Install the updated plug-ins
  8. Launch Logic 7 and it will check through again to see if the plug-ins are now compatible
  9. Even if they all seem to pass, re-launch the AU validation tool and check that they are all verified/enabled. Just make sure that any plug-in which has a tick next to it, has passed the validation and you should be ok.

With Native Instruments plug-ins, there is usually an additional Logic 7 AU hotfix update to download.

Some plug-ins are only compatible with Logic 7 on beta versions. We have only tested the Fxpansion BFD and Waves betas but they seem fine.

Other plug-ins are not yet Logic 7 compatible but keep an eye on their websites as new ones are being posted regularly.
